My thoughts on Valentines Day seem to be far from the norm.
Of course the norm being the candy buying, card making, flower sneezing of what makes this day the day it is.
For the record I have not been single for a Valentines Day since I was 16, so there is by no means a bitter gal under my thoughts of this evil day. I just find it silly and ridiculous. I ran to CVS yesterday to see groups of men hurrying to pick up heart shaped boxes of stale candy, silly cards that sing to you when they are opened and $10.00 stuffed bears with a big heart on their bellies that read something along the lines “Be Mine.” This morning bright and early I ran to Price Chopper to pick up bagels for breakfast only to see hordes of men doing their last minute Valentines shopping at the grocery store florist, give me a break.
If I was a romantic person this day would be the last day that I would see as being romantic. I over the years have been told that I am suppose to be the “girl” and be showered with gifts and love. I say what about the other 364 days of year? Why should I not be shown love and “romance” on any other day, maybe a day that is special to me and the person I love. That would be too simple and would put Hallmark and every chocolate company out of business. God knows I do not want some cheesy cliche` red roses that are going to die within a couple days and make me sneeze. I do not want any last minute gift that is bought for me out of obligation. I honestly feel bad for men out there that have to compete with other men to up what they give as a gift. Next thing you know they will be targeting Valentines Day along with Christmas as a great time to buy a car for your significant other.
Maybe if we all decided that enough was enough, and not buy into the notion that we need to celebrate and spend loads of money on a silly holiday. Just show your love the rest of the year.
